What Happens When we Stop Reading?

What Happens When We Don't Read

Eventually, many people stop reading as they grow older. Why? The most common reason people stop reading is most likely due to technology. Social media and television steal our attention from books. There is just a lot more you can see and do on the internet compared to reading a book. Sitting down and reading a book is just too hard for many people because they do not have the patience or time.

People also make excuses including, but not limited to:
  • Books are expensive
  • I'm not sure what I should read
  • I can just watch the movie
  • Reading is too hard
  • Reading is boring
However, books are not expensive because of library cards and free access online. Finding something to read can be easy if you just start reading something that sounds or looks somewhat interesting. Movies are almost, if not always, a bad interpretation of the book. Reading can be hard at first, but as you learn more from it, it becomes easy. Although reading can seem boring to many, perhaps you have not found the book that would get you hooked.

But what happens after we stop reading? Reading stimulates the brain and helps you focus. It improves literacy, general knowledge and communication. When you don't read, you lose all these benefits. When people think of reading books, they think of physical paper books you'd have to buy or check out from a store or library. Fortunately, because of the internet, reading can be accessed from anywhere at any time through e-books, blogs, articles, etc.

So you want to get back into reading again? The best way to get back into reading is to find your favorite book of all time and rekindle the feeling you had when you first read it. If not, try to make time and find a book club or find a quiet space free of distractions. As soon as you get back into your groove, you'll start to feel less stressed out more healthy.
